About · Charlie Hulme

Both halves of the job.

I'm an operator-engineer. I build the production AI & automation a business runs on, and I run the business it's built for. Most people do one of those. I do both, from the same desk: production systems in daily use, governed to survive board review and external audit, with nothing lost in the handoff between strategy, engineering and the P&L.

The short version

I'm an operator-engineer. I design and ship production LLM / RAG systems, automation and full-stack software, and I own the budgeting, forecasting, P&L and board-level reporting for the multi-brand group I run. The rare part isn't the code or the commercials on their own. It's holding both at once, so I choose which system is worth building because I'm the one reading the P&L it feeds.

I came up through responsibility rather than a computer-science degree. I started behind a camera, ended up owning the systems, then owned the numbers, and learned to build properly by shipping real software that had to work. Everything I know was proven in production under real stakes, which I'd take over a certificate any day.

Everything I ship is measured, governed and tied to a number it has to move. I run AI where wrong outputs carry real financial and legal weight, under board review and external audit, so evals, grounding, access control and human-in-the-loop aren't slides for me; they're how I already work.

What I'm good at

Hands-on from model to production, and from the P&L back.

Enterprise-grade by default

Not a prototype-builder. I run production AI where wrong answers carry financial and legal weight: built to scale, secure and survive audit.

Scale & integration

One layer over the whole stack

An idempotent, rate-limit-aware AI & automation layer across CRM, finance, field-service, telephony and e-sign for a multi-brand group, in daily production, not a pilot.

Security & access

Least-privilege by design

Role-based access, managed secrets and scoped API integration; consequential AI actions gated behind human sign-off, every automated decision logged and traceable.

Governance & audit

Built to survive scrutiny

Eval gates, answers grounded to source records, human-in-the-loop and regression-gated CI, already operating under board review and external audit.

Leadership

Teams & stakeholders

Led a remote engineering squad end-to-end (roadmaps, code review, QA) and report at board level. I set the strategy, ship it, and own the outcome.

Reliability

Keeps working unwatched

Monitoring, alerting and a measurable quality number on every change. Systems that don't quietly rot the moment attention moves elsewhere.

Outcome ownership

Tied to the P&L

Every build starts from a business number it has to move: forecasting, board reporting and the unit-economics model I own personally.

Enterprise-grade discipline, ready to drop into your stack.

Experience

One business, growing responsibility. Figures banded for confidentiality.

UK multi-brand services group
Business Manager, Technology, Systems & AI
  • Run day-to-day operations of a ~30-person, multi-£m business and own the technology, data and AI it depends on.
  • Designed and built an organisation-wide multi-agent LLM knowledge platform (Postgres + pgvector, hybrid retrieval, eval-gated); lifted retrieval recall@5 from ~0.05 to ~0.85.
  • Shipped AI decision-support tools (forecasting, an operations-risk co-pilot, marketing attribution) in daily use; AI-enabled instant quoting lifted online conversion 2×+.
  • Automated roughly half of CRM activity (~200 staff-hours/month saved); built the unit-economics model and board-level monthly management reporting.
  • Restructured sales incentives and supported double-digit YoY growth in signed sales; adviser to the board on growth and M&A.

Technical, Media & Business Systems Lead
  • Designed a unified SaaS & API architecture across CRM, telephony, field-service and finance; cut licence spend ~18% and dispatch time from 12 to 3 minutes.
  • Led a remote squad of 4 developers (roadmaps, code review, QA); launched a self-service booking portal; migrated brand sites to Astro + Cloudflare with no loss of search rankings.
  • Introduced OKRs and process; directed content across the group, growing organic leads and cutting acquisition cost.

  • Built the in-house video and content capability: the foundation later scaled with automation and AI.

Education

BA (Hons) Film Production, University of Portsmouth.

3 A-Levels (A*-C) · 8 GCSEs (A*-C) including English and Maths.

Self-directed engineering across AI, full-stack and infrastructure, proven in production, not certificated. The credibility is the live systems and the code in daily use, not the paper.

What I'm looking for

The next role

  • AI & Automation Lead: own AI from strategy to production.
  • Head of AI & Operations: build the AI and run what it serves.
  • Solutions Architect: design the systems, then ship them.

Permanent or fractional · UK, remote / hybrid · I'm happiest where the work touches both the build and the number it moves.
